My first CSTI (Community Strategic Training Initiative) was in 1994 when I was visitng from New York and the focus was on "Fighting the Right". I recall that Loretta Ross and other major thinkers and visionaries were sharing their experiences and strategies to help us foresee and respond to this massive onslought to our rioghts and democracy.

The real story, however, is how that fledgling organization learned to challenge the Right Wing's initiatives against civil rights, especially with respect to the LGBT community.

In 2003, I volunteered for a small pro-LGBT PAC that was in the process of merging with another organization. A series of tense negotiations led to a day-long retreat. At our request, Moira Bowman, from the Western States Center, facilitated this meeting. This was perhaps the toughest, most grueling meeting I had every participated in.
