I had the pleasure to work at Western States Center through New Voices Fellowship from 2005-2007. I credit Western States Center and my New Voices Fellowship for giving me the United States context for community organizing.

In 2007, after several terms as The Center's board chair, and more than 10 total years as a board member, I was able to retire, and was moved up to Board Emerita. I am proud of our excellent trend-spotting, coalition building, issues analysis, and organizational engagement– work that continues to be pertinent, current, leading edge and critical to building real community in the West.

21 years old, eh? That seems about right - my daughter Sarah was born during the first year of Western States, and she's turning 21. We put her photo on the cover of the first issue of the Western States newsletter, held in the arms of Len Norwitz, one of our first staff - Rebecca Roby and Jill Spencer were in that picture, too. How time flies!

For most of the 21 years it has been in existence, the Western States Center has been a source of strategic, technical, and social support to me and organizations I've worked with. I consider it a political home of sorts; a place where I gained many of the skills, the relationships and the confidence I needed to carve out a life in social change in the west.

Western States Center has been an incredible resource for several progressive organizations I've worked with - as trainers bringing similar organizations together, as facilitators bringing cross-issue organizations together, as consultants helping single organizations build capacity.
